Chennai, July 17, 2025 – A fresh political storm has erupted in Tamil Nadu, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K. Annamalai sharply criticizing the Congress party for its silence over controversial remarks made by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva about former Chief Minister and Congress stalwart K. Kamaraj. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called for restraint, urging parties to avoid turning the issue into a public debate.
The controversy stems from Siva’s comments, which alleged that Kamaraj, a revered figure in Tamil Nadu politics known for his simplicity and transformative governance, “wouldn’t sleep without an air conditioner” and had urged DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi in his final days to “protect democracy.” These remarks, widely perceived as derogatory, have sparked unease within the DMK-Congress alliance, with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai and Karur MP S. Jothimani condemning Siva’s statements as baseless and disrespectful.
Annamalai, seizing the opportunity to challenge the opposition alliance, questioned the Congress’s inaction, asking whether it would reconsider its partnership with the DMK. In a statement to the press, he said, “Is Congress still silent after DMK speaking factually incorrect about K. Kamaraj? Is Congress ready to leave the DMK alliance? Is Congress prepared to contest alone to uphold its dignity?” He further accused the DMK of attempting to tarnish Kamaraj’s legacy, a charge echoed by posts on X, where users criticized the DMK for dragging down the former chief minister’s reputation.
Selvaperunthagai, responding to Siva’s remarks, emphasized Kamaraj’s unassailable legacy, stating, “Nobody has the right to question or speak in such a manner about Kamaraj. He is speaking without any evidence. Nobody is qualified to criticize Kamarajar.” Jothimani, reinforcing this stance, highlighted Kamaraj’s honesty and simplicity, attributing his electoral defeats to “myths spread by the DMK.”
In an attempt to defuse the situation, Siva clarified that he held Kamaraj in high regard and requested that his comments not be misconstrued or debated further. However, the remarks have already strained the DMK-Congress alliance, with some Congress leaders expressing discomfort over the lack of immediate action from their party’s leadership.
Chief Minister Stalin, addressing the controversy, urged all parties to refrain from escalating the issue. In a post on X, he called for unity and restraint, stating, “Do not give room to the intentions of evil forces,” signaling his intent to prevent the remarks from derailing the DMK-Congress alliance ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The controversy has also drawn attention to broader tensions within Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Annamalai, known for his aggressive critique of the DMK, has used the incident to highlight what he perceives as the ruling party’s disregard for Tamil Nadu’s historical figures. Posts on X from BJP supporters and other political groups, such as the AIADMK, have amplified this sentiment, accusing the DMK of repeatedly targeting Kamaraj’s legacy while questioning Congress’s silence.
Adding to the complexity, Congress leader Tiruchi Velusamy’s remarks at a public rally in Manaparai, suggesting that only a coalition government is feasible in Tamil Nadu post-2026 and predicting ministerial roles for Congress leaders, have raised eyebrows. Selvaperunthagai clarified that such decisions would rest with the Congress high command, underscoring internal deliberations within the party about its future strategy in the state.
As Tamil Nadu gears up for the 2026 elections, the current spat underscores the fragile dynamics of coalition politics in the state. The DMK-Congress alliance, a key player in Tamil Nadu’s political arena, faces challenges in maintaining unity amid such controversies. Annamalai’s pointed attack on Congress’s silence and Stalin’s call for restraint reflect the high-stakes maneuvering as parties position themselves for electoral battles ahead.
The episode also highlights the enduring legacy of K. Kamaraj, whose contributions to education and governance continue to resonate in Tamil Nadu. As political parties trade barbs, the debate over his legacy risks overshadowing pressing issues, with analysts warning that such controversies could polarize voters further.
For now, all eyes are on the Congress’s next move and whether the DMK can navigate this turbulence to preserve its alliance. As the political temperature rises, Tamil Nadu remains a battleground for competing narratives, with Kamaraj’s legacy at the heart of the latest clash.
