Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, August 11, 2025 – The 2024 Lok Sabha election in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, has become a flashpoint in the ongoing national controversy over alleged electoral fraud, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s accusations of widespread vote theft clashing with local claims that his party’s alliance was complicit in manipulating results. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) alleges that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress alliance engineered the defeat of its candidate, V. Vijayaprabhakaran, in favor of Congress’s B. Manickam Tagore in Virudhunagar, prompting a legal challenge and widespread public debate.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Manickam Tagore secured victory in Virudhunagar with 385,256 votes, defeating Vijayaprabhakaran by a narrow margin of 4,379 votes (380,877 votes). However, the DMDK contends that Vijayaprabhakaran held a consistent lead of 4,000 to 6,000 votes throughout the counting process on June 4, 2024, until the final hours, when the results allegedly shifted due to irregularities.
Local Allegations of Vote Tampering
The DMDK, led by Premalatha Vijayakanth, has accused the DMK-Congress alliance of orchestrating vote theft in Virudhunagar. According to the party, Vijayaprabhakaran was ahead by approximately 10,000 votes at noon on counting day. However, a meeting involving DMK Minister Murthy and S.S.R. Ramachandran, alongside election officials, allegedly took place at the counting center, after which the tide turned in Tagore’s favor. The DMDK claims that three Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were set aside under the pretext of being faulty, with votes later counted using Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips, raising suspicions of manipulation.
Adding to the controversy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced at 8 p.m. on June 4 that the DMK alliance had won all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, despite counting in Virudhunagar continuing past 9 p.m. Critics argue this premature declaration suggests foreknowledge of manipulated results. The DMDK has filed a petition with the ECI, demanding a recount under the supervision of a retired judge, and a legal case is underway based on allegations that the Congress, as part of the DMK alliance, stole Vijayaprabhakaran’s votes.
Local residents, election officials, and rival candidates have taken to social media, sharing alleged photographic evidence of irregularities. Political analysts and Virudhunagar voters widely believe that Vijayaprabhakaran’s victory was assured until the final hour, when pressure from DMK ministers allegedly led the ECI to alter the outcome.
Rahul Gandhi’s National Vote Theft Campaign
The Virudhunagar controversy has gained added significance in light of Rahul Gandhi’s nationwide allegations of electoral fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on August 7, 2025, Gandhi accused the ECI of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to manipulate voter lists and steal votes in over 80 constituencies, including Karnataka’s Mahadevapura, where he claimed over 100,000 fake voters were registered. Gandhi’s campaign alleges systemic fraud involving duplicate voters, fake addresses, and misuse of voter registration forms, describing it as a betrayal of the Constitution.
Gandhi has demanded the release of electronic voter lists and polling booth videos for the past decade, asserting that such transparency would prove that the Prime Minister became PM by stealing votes. He has also warned ECI officials of accountability, stating, “We will not spare you. You are working against India, and this is no less than treason.” The ECI has dismissed these claims as baseless and urged Gandhi to provide a signed declaration or apologize, noting that no election petitions were filed by Congress candidates in Karnataka under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Contradictions and Criticism
Critics of Gandhi, including BJP leaders and local observers in Virudhunagar, have highlighted the irony of his allegations given the accusations against the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu. BJP spokespersons have demanded Gandhi’s resignation from the Lok Sabha, arguing that his failure to provide concrete evidence undermines his credibility. In Virudhunagar, political observers and DMDK supporters argue that Gandhi’s silence on the alleged vote theft by his party’s alliance undermines his national campaign against electoral fraud. They point to the local outcry, with residents and rival candidates alleging that DMK ministers pressured election officials to secure Tagore’s victory, as evidence of Congress’s complicity.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, a Congress ally, has backed Gandhi’s claims, alleging that the BJP manipulated voter lists in Karnataka and other states. However, the ECI has refuted these accusations, emphasizing that electoral rolls were prepared transparently and shared with all recognized parties, with no appeals filed against alleged irregularities in Karnataka.
Ongoing Investigations
The DMDK’s petition in Virudhunagar has prompted the ECI to seek detailed reports from the Returning Officer and Election Observer, including video footage of the counting process. Meanwhile, Gandhi’s allegations have led to a Karnataka Law Department investigation into the Mahadevapura claims, as directed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Congress has launched a web portal to collect public complaints about voter fraud, further escalating the national debate.
As the Virudhunagar case and Gandhi’s broader allegations unfold, they continue to raise serious questions about the integrity of India’s electoral process. With legal proceedings and public protests ongoing, the controversy underscores the need for greater transparency to restore trust in the democratic system.
