Guntur, India – June 22, 2025: A 55-year-old man died in a tragic accident in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, after being struck by a vehicle carrying former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy during a political rally on Wednesday, June 18. Local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The victim, Cheeli Singaiah, was a supporter of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Reddy. According to authorities, Singaiah slipped and fell in front of Reddy’s vehicle while attempting to shower flowers on the former leader as his convoy passed through Etukuru village. Officials reported that the front right wheel of the vehicle ran over Singaiah’s neck, causing fatal injuries.
Singaiah was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Guntur Government Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, has sparked widespread attention and prompted police to investigate further.The rally was part of Reddy’s visit to Rentapalla village in Palnadu district to console the family of a YSRCP member who had died by suicide. Despite police restrictions allowing only three vehicles and 100 supporters, a large crowd and numerous vehicles joined the convoy, contributing to the chaotic scene.
Guntur Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar confirmed the incident and said a case has been registered. Authorities are examining whether negligence or security lapses played a role. Reports indicate that Reddy, who was waving to supporters from the vehicle, was unaware of the accident at the time.The YSRCP has called the incident an unfortunate accident and accused political rivals of exploiting it to tarnish Reddy’s image. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticized the rally’s organization, alleging it violated police guidelines.
Singaiah’s family has demanded a thorough investigation, and the YSRCP has provided financial assistance of 10 lakh rupees (approximately $12,000 USD) to support them.
The incident has raised concerns about crowd management and security protocols during political events in India, with authorities pledging to review existing guidelines to prevent future tragedies.
