CHENNAI, India, July 14, 2025 — A massive fire broke out on a freight train carrying crude oil in Tamil Nadu, southern India, on Sunday, July 13, causing significant disruptions to rail services but no loss of life. The blaze, which engulfed several tankers near Tiruvallur, about 43 kilometers from Chennai, triggered a swift response from authorities and led to the evacuation of nearby residents as a precaution.
The incident occurred around 5:00 AM when a goods train, transporting 45 tankers of crude oil or high-speed diesel from Ennore in Chennai to destinations including Mumbai and Jolarpettai, caught fire in the Tiruvallur-Egattur section. At least four to five wagons were consumed by flames, with some reports indicating up to 18 tankers were damaged. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, creating panic among local residents and commuters. Videos of the blaze, showing towering flames and charred remains of the tankers, quickly spread across social media.
Firefighting units from Tiruvallur and suburban Chennai, supported by over 25 fire tenders, worked tirelessly for nearly seven hours to extinguish the fire. Southern Railway officials and fire services detached unaffected wagons to prevent the blaze from spreading further. As a safety measure, overhead power supplies for train operations were cut, halting rail traffic on the busy Chennai-Arakkonam route, which connects Chennai to neighboring states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.
The fire caused widespread disruption, with eight express trains canceled and several others diverted or short-terminated. Southern Railway engineers worked around the clock to repair damaged tracks and electrical cables, aiming for partial restoration of services by midnight on Sunday and full restoration by early Monday. To ease commuter inconvenience, special buses were arranged for affected passengers.
Authorities, including Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Minorities and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare, S.M. Nasar, inspected the site. Nearby residents were temporarily relocated to shelters due to the heavy smoke and risk of further incidents. District Collector M. Prathap confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported, a fortunate outcome given the scale of the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Some reports suggest a possible derailment may have triggered the blaze, with sparks igniting the highly flammable cargo. Railway officials are examining the incident to determine the exact circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
The disruption affected thousands of passengers, highlighting the critical role of the Chennai-Arakkonam route in regional connectivity. Southern Railway has assured the public that efforts are underway to restore normalcy as quickly as possible. For now, the focus remains on ensuring safety and resuming services on this vital rail corridor.
