Chennai/New Delhi, June 14, 2025 – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to support 370 Tamil families displaced by the demolition of Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, South East Delhi. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) razed the settlement on June 1, 2025, leaving hundreds homeless. Stalin raised concerns in a letter delivered on June 13 by a delegation led by MP T.R. Baalu.
The families, many in Delhi for over 60 years, worked as domestic help and laborers in areas like Jangpura and Lajpat Nagar. The demolition followed a Delhi High Court order on May 9, 2025, to clear encroachments for drain cleaning to prevent flooding. Only 189 families qualified for relocation to incomplete EWS flats in Narela, 20 kilometers away.
Stalin requested Gupta to complete the flats, provide water, electricity, and sanitation, and ensure school admissions for over 150 children. He also sought Tamil-medium schooling, healthcare, fair-price shops, and transport links. The demolition sparked political outrage. AAP and Congress accused the BJP-led Delhi government of neglecting the poor. AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized Gupta’s assurances, while Congress’ Devender Yadav called the action “shocking.”
Gupta defended the demolition, citing court orders and prior housing offers in Narela. She highlighted ₹700 crore in projects for flood management and housing. Tamil Nadu offered aid for families returning to the state, but many prefer staying in Delhi due to job prospects. The crisis highlights urban migration challenges in India. Delhi’s response will be closely watched.
