New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hosted the President of Seychelles, marking a significant milestone in India–Seychelles relations with the announcement of a $175 million special economic assistance package aimed at strengthening development cooperation and strategic ties in the Indian Ocean region.
The comprehensive package includes $125 million in concessional credit and $50 million in grants, targeted at priority sectors such as housing, e-mobility, healthcare, defense cooperation, and capacity building. As part of India’s immediate support for food security, 1,000 metric tons of grains are already en route to Seychelles, underscoring New Delhi’s commitment to addressing urgent needs of its island partner.
SESEL Joint Vision Adopted
During the high-level talks, the two leaders adopted the SESEL Joint Vision, a forward-looking framework designed to elevate bilateral cooperation in sustainability, economic growth, and regional security. The vision places particular emphasis on defense collaboration, maritime security, renewable energy, climate resilience, and digital solutions, reflecting shared priorities as Indian Ocean nations.
Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were also signed, including an agreement to train 250 Seychellois government officials in India, alongside cooperation in other strategic and developmental areas. These initiatives aim to enhance institutional capacity and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
50 Years of Partnership
The visit holds symbolic importance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence and five decades of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. Both leaders highlighted the enduring friendship built on mutual respect, shared maritime interests, and cultural connections.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s vision for the Indian Ocean under the MAHASAGAR framework (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), positioning Seychelles as a key partner in ensuring a free, open, and secure Indian Ocean.
The Seychelles President, in turn, welcomed India’s continued support, describing the partnership as vital for the country’s sustainable development and regional stability.
With the new aid package and strategic vision, India and Seychelles have signaled a renewed commitment to deepening cooperation—one that blends development, security, and sustainability at a time of growing geopolitical importance for the Indian Ocean region.
