TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan, July 27, 2025 — A violent mass stabbing at a Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, July 26, left 11 people injured, with six in critical condition, authorities confirmed. The suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan resident, is in custody, and the attack is believed to be a random act of violence.
The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. local time near the store’s checkout area, when the suspect, armed with a folding knife, began attacking shoppers and bystanders, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea. A sheriff’s deputy arrived within three minutes of the emergency call and apprehended the suspect, with assistance from citizens in the store who also helped treat victims. “It appears that these were all random acts,” Sheriff Shea said at a press conference, noting that the victims were not predetermined targets.
Munson Medical Center, the region’s largest hospital, reported treating 11 victims, with six males and five females affected. Six victims were in critical condition, five in serious condition, and three were undergoing surgery as of Saturday evening, according to hospital spokesperson Megan Brown. The ages of the victims have not yet been disclosed.
Eyewitness Julia Martell, 30, described a chaotic scene, telling reporters she heard screams and saw the suspect running through the store’s pharmacy section, wielding a knife with a roughly two-inch blade. “There was blood everywhere,” Martell recounted, noting that she fled after the suspect briefly moved toward her before turning back toward the store’s entrance.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal personnel are assisting the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
Walmart issued a statement condemning the violence: “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.” The company is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Shea emphasized the rarity of such violence in Traverse City, a popular vacation destination on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay, approximately 255 miles northwest of Detroit. “No area is immune to this kind of activity, unfortunately,” he said, urging vigilance. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab is processing the scene, and authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive, pending further investigation.
The incident has shaken the close-knit community, with former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Traverse City homeowner, expressing solidarity: “Along with the whole Traverse City community, my husband Chasten and I are shaken by this senseless violence.”
As the investigation unfolds, authorities have asked the public to avoid the area around the Walmart on Crossing Circle. Further updates on the victims’ conditions and the suspect’s motives are expected as the case develops.
