Oslo, Norway (AP) — The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Friday for her relentless nonviolent struggle to restore democracy under Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian rule. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, committee chair, praised her as a “beacon of civilian courage” for mobilizing Venezuela’s opposition and rallying global support against dictatorship.
Machado, 58, an industrial engineer and founder of Vente Venezuela, has faced arrest warrants, assassination threats, and a 2024 court ban barring her from running for president. Despite living in hiding since August 2024, she backed opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia in the contested 2024 election, claiming victory based on independent vote counts. Her leadership has spotlighted Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis, marked by economic collapse and mass emigration.
“Democracy is the bedrock of peace,” the committee stated, aligning Machado’s work with Alfred Nobel’s vision of fostering fraternity and peace. Her 2023 opposition primary win and international advocacy, including the 2024 Sakharov Prize, underscored her global influence.
The decision sidelined speculation around U.S. President Donald Trump, whose Middle East peace efforts were overshadowed by Machado’s 67% odds in prediction markets. U.S. senators and global leaders, including Antony Blinken, hailed her as a symbol of hope, while Maduro’s government called the award “imperialist meddling.”
Machado dedicated the $1.05 million prize to Venezuelans fighting for freedom, vowing to push for a peaceful democratic transition. The award will be presented in Oslo on December 10.
