Gaza City, September 17, 2025 — Thousands of Palestinians fled their homes in Gaza City on Wednesday as Israeli military forces launched a significant operation in the densely populated urban center, escalating the ongoing conflict in the region. The advance has triggered widespread displacement, with families seeking safety amid intensifying violence.
According to local authorities and eyewitnesses, Israeli troops, supported by airstrikes and armored vehicles, moved into several neighborhoods in Gaza City, targeting what the Israeli military described as “militant infrastructure” linked to Hamas. The operation follows weeks of heightened tensions and rocket exchanges between Israel and Palestinian militant groups.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 47 Palestinians, including civilians, were killed in the latest wave of airstrikes and ground operations, with over 200 injured. The ministry warned that the casualty toll could rise as fighting continues. No official figures on Israeli casualties were immediately available, though the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their operations were aimed at neutralizing threats while minimizing civilian harm.
Residents described chaotic scenes as families packed belongings and fled on foot, by car, or on donkey carts toward southern Gaza or makeshift shelters. “We heard explosions all night, and by morning, tanks were in the streets,” said Mahmoud Salah, a 34-year-old shopkeeper from the Rimal neighborhood. “We had no choice but to leave everything behind.”
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) estimated that over 20,000 people had been displaced within hours of the operation’s start. UNRWA and other humanitarian organizations expressed alarm over the deteriorating situation, warning of a potential humanitarian crisis as shelters and medical facilities struggle to accommodate the influx of displaced people. “The scale of displacement is overwhelming, and access to food, water, and medical care is critically limited,” said an UNRWA spokesperson.
The Israeli military stated that the operation was a response to “sustained rocket fire and terrorist activities” originating from Gaza City. In a statement, the IDF urged civilians to evacuate to designated safe zones, though many residents reported confusion over where to go, with some areas under bombardment.
International reactions were swift, with the United Nations calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging all parties to prioritize civilian safety. The United States, a key ally of Israel, reiterated its support for Israel’s right to self-defense while calling for restraint to avoid further civilian casualties. Meanwhile, several Arab nations, including Egypt and Jordan, condemned the operation, accusing Israel of disproportionate force and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The advance into Gaza City marks one of the largest military operations in the region since the escalation of hostilities in 2023. Analysts warn that the incursion risks further destabilizing the region, with potential ripple effects across the Middle East.
As night fell, sporadic gunfire and explosions continued to echo across Gaza City, with no immediate end to the fighting in sight. Humanitarian organizations are appealing for urgent international aid to support the displaced, while calls for diplomatic intervention grow louder amid fears of a deepening crisis.
