New Delhi, May 31, 2025 — India is witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 infections, with active cases climbing to 3,395 as of Saturday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The rise comes amid growing concerns over the spread of new Omicron sub-variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which are currently under close observation by national health authorities.
In the past 24 hours alone, seven fatalities related to COVID-19 were reported, bringing the total number of COVID-linked deaths this year to 22. The ministry noted that most of the deceased had underlying comorbidities. The latest deaths were recorded in Maharashtra (2), and one each in Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, over 1,430 patients have been discharged after successful treatment, indicating a high recovery rate. Still, health authorities have expressed concern over the sharp uptick in cases over the past week, particularly in states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi.
State-wise Distribution
Kerala continues to lead with the highest number of active cases at 1,336. It is followed by:
Maharashtra: 467 cases
Delhi: 375 cases
Gujarat: 265 cases
Karnataka: 234 cases
Tamil Nadu: 185 cases
West Bengal: 205 cases
Uttar Pradesh: 117 cases
These eight states currently account for the majority of active infections in the country.
Nature of Infections
Medical experts have observed that most recent infections are mild in nature, with symptoms such as sore throat, low-grade fever, fatigue, and cold-like signs. However, given the unpredictability of viral mutations, the Ministry of Health has advised caution.
Government Response
The Union Health Ministry has asked all states and union territories to enhance surveillance, increase testing, and ramp up genome sequencing. Health infrastructure preparedness reports have been requested by June 2, 2025, to ensure swift response capabilities in case of a sudden spike.
Union Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav, assured that the central health department and the Ministry of AYUSH are jointly monitoring the situation. “We are fully alert, and the health systems are well-equipped to manage any emergency,” he stated.
Advisory for Schools and the Public
In response to the rising numbers, several state governments have issued health advisories. Karnataka has recommended that children displaying symptoms like fever or cough refrain from attending school. The public has been urged to maintain personal hygiene, avoid crowded gatherings, and adhere to vaccination and booster shot guidelines.
