New Delhi, August 12, 2025 — Tensions flared outside India’s Parliament on Tuesday as opposition MPs from the India Bloc, including prominent Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi, staged a protest against the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a special revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The demonstration, marked by slogans and placards, accused the Election Commission of undermining democratic processes ahead of the state’s upcoming by-elections.
The controversy centers on the Election Commission’s directive to revise voter lists in select constituencies in Bihar, a move the opposition claims is designed to manipulate voter demographics in favor of the ruling coalition. The India Bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, alleges that the revision disproportionately targets marginalized communities, potentially disenfranchising thousands of voters.
“We are here to protect the sanctity of our democracy,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters at the protest site. “This selective revision is a blatant attempt to suppress the voice of the people of Bihar.” Sonia Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and former party president, joined the protest in a show of solidarity, emphasizing the need for transparency in electoral processes.
The Election Commission has defended its decision, stating that the revision aims to update voter lists and remove discrepancies, ensuring a fair electoral process. “The special revision is a routine exercise to maintain the integrity of the voter rolls,” an Election Commission spokesperson said in a statement.
The protests, which saw participation from MPs across opposition parties, briefly disrupted traffic near Parliament and drew significant media attention. Security personnel were deployed to maintain order, and no incidents of violence were reported.
Political analysts suggest the controversy could escalate tensions between the opposition and the ruling coalition as Bihar gears up for by-elections, which are seen as a litmus test for both sides ahead of the 2025 general elections. The India Bloc has vowed to continue its agitation, demanding an immediate halt to the revision process and a public explanation from the Election Commission.
As the standoff continues, all eyes remain on Bihar, where the electoral roll revision has become a flashpoint in India’s polarized political landscape.
