New Delhi, India, August 20, 2025 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked on Wednesday morning during a weekly “Jan Sunwai” public grievance hearing at her official residence in Civil Lines, according to the Bharatiya Janata Party. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders and raised concerns about security arrangements for public officials in the national capital.
The attack occurred around 8:30 AM IST when a man, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, approached the Chief Minister during the public hearing. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the assailant posed as a complainant, handed Gupta some papers related to a court case, and then allegedly assaulted her. Reports vary, with some sources claiming the attacker slapped Gupta and pulled her hair, while others suggest he attempted to pull her toward him, resulting in a minor injury when her head struck a table during a scuffle.
Delhi Police swiftly apprehended the suspect, who is currently being interrogated at the Civil Lines Police Station. Authorities have contacted Gujarat Police to verify the accused’s identity and background. Initial investigations suggest Sakriya may have been motivated by a personal grievance, possibly related to a relative’s imprisonment, though the exact motive remains under investigation. Delhi Police Commissioner S.B.K. Singh and senior officials are reviewing CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva condemned the attack, describing it as a shameful act and denying claims that Gupta was slapped or struck with a stone. He stated, “The Chief Minister is stable but shaken. She remains committed to her public duties and will continue her scheduled programs.” Gupta was taken to a hospital for a medical examination, where doctors confirmed she sustained a minor injury to her forehead and is under observation.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions across the political spectrum. Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the attack, stating, “In a democratic system, differences of opinion are acceptable, but there is no place for violence. I am confident Delhi Police will take appropriate action.” AAP’s Leader of Opposition, Atishi, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that violence has no place in democracy and urging strict action against the culprit. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav called the incident unfortunate, raising concerns about women’s safety in the capital, stating, “If the Chief Minister is not safe, how can ordinary citizens feel secure?”
BJP leaders, including Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, alleged a political conspiracy behind the attack, citing Gupta’s accessibility and commitment to public service as a potential motive for opposition unrest. Sirsa said, “Her fearless connect with people clearly unsettles the opposition, which is stooping to such shameful tactics.” Conversely, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal called for a thorough investigation, pointing to a failure of the Home Ministry to ensure security.
The attack has spotlighted security protocols at public grievance programs like Jan Sunwai, where citizens directly present their issues to the Chief Minister. The breach at Gupta’s heavily guarded residence has prompted calls for a review of safety measures for public officials. Delhi Police have deployed additional security forces to the Chief Minister’s residence, and the Ministry of Home Affairs has been informed of the incident.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene. Anjali, a complainant present at the event, told reporters, “Everyone has the right to Jan Sunwai. If an imposter can attack the Chief Minister, this is a big deal.” Another attendee, Shailendra Kumar, recounted, “I was there with a sewer complaint when chaos broke out. The police quickly detained the attacker.”
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Delhi, following recent hoax bomb threats to schools. Gupta, who assumed office on February 20, 2025, after the BJP’s return to power in Delhi, has been a prominent figure in the city’s governance, known for her active engagement with citizens through initiatives like Jan Sunwai.
As investigations continue, the attack has ignited a broader debate on political violence and public safety in India’s capital, with authorities under pressure to ensure accountability and prevent future breaches.
