Bridge Collapse in Maharashtra, India Kills Four, Injures Dozens

A tragic bridge collapse in Maharashtra’s Kundmala area near Talegaon Dabhade, Pune, claimed at least four lives and injured 32 others on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred between 3:30 and 4:30 PM IST when an approximately 30-year-old iron bridge spanning the flooded Indrayani River gave way under the weight of 100-125 tourists, far exceeding its intended capacity.
The bridge, primarily constructed for local farmers, was overcrowded with visitors drawn to the site by the river’s swollen currents, fueled by recent heavy rainfall. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as the structure buckled, sending dozens into the turbulent waters below.
Authorities confirmed that 20-25 people were swept away by the river’s strong currents, with one individual still trapped under debris as of Sunday evening.
Rescue operations were promptly launched, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and divers working tirelessly to locate survivors and recover bodies. Two of the four deceased have been retrieved, and search efforts continue for those unaccounted for. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, with medical teams on high alert.
Preliminary assessments suggest the bridge’s rusted condition, combined with the excessive load, contributed to the collapse. Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause and assess whether maintenance lapses played a role.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in Cyprus, expressed condolences and assured full support for the victims. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the Pune bridge collapse. My thoughts are with the affected families. The government is ensuring all possible assistance for rescue and relief,” Modi stated via social media. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also contacted Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to coordinate central government aid.
The collapse has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of aging infrastructure in India, particularly in rural areas where maintenance is often neglected. Authorities have urged the public to avoid similar structures during adverse weather conditions as rescue efforts continue.
